Max Parthas, ASNN National Campaign Coordinator, Takes a Stand on Emancipation Day in Washington D.C.

Max Parthas, a pivotal voice in the fight against systemic injustice, commemorates Emancipation Day not just as a remembrance of historical milestones but as a stark reminder of the work still needed. "We're gathered here in the shadow of the Capitol, reflecting on a war begun at Fort Sumter and the chains we've yet to break," Max states.

As the National Campaign Coordinator for the Abolish Slavery National Network, Max discusses the significant strides made: "Through our collective effort, seven states have abolished slavery clauses used to justify labor as criminal punishment. Yet, this is just the beginning."

Max ties the persistence of such clauses directly to historical practices like convict leasing, revealing the profound systemic issues still at play. "What many don't realize is that the transition from chattel slavery to prison slavery changed only the handlers, not the practice. The state, rather than individuals, now perpetuates this form of bondage," he explains, highlighting the brutal efficiency of convict leasing that followed emancipation.

On this day of reflection, Max calls for a critical reevaluation of our progress and a renewed commitment to true emancipation. "Today, as we stand in D.C., let us not forget that our fight is for the removal of slavery in all its forms from every constitution, every law, every practice across our nation," he passionately declares.

Sara Corbett, ASNN Youth Lead Organizer, speaks powerfully about the urgent need for systemic change. "Today marks the anniversary of the Compensating Emancipation Act of 1862, yet here we stand, still grappling with forms of slavery embedded within our systems."

As the Youth Lead Organizer for the Abolish Slavery National Network (ASNN), Sara's dedication to ending constitutional slavery and involuntary servitude shines through. "Our goal is clear – to envision and realize a United States where no form of slavery exists, where all are truly free and protected by our constitutions," she asserts.

With a deep personal commitment to social justice, influenced by her upbringing and pivotal readings like 'Just Mercy', Sara discusses her journey into activism. "As a white individual, I recognize my privilege and the critical role I play in supporting, not overshadowing, those directly affected by these injustices."

She emphasizes the unique position of D.C., lacking a state constitution, which ties its laws directly to federal governance under the 13th Amendment. This, Sara points out, allows slavery under certain conditions, an unacceptable reality in her view.

Highlighting the ongoing efforts to pass the Abolition Amendment, Sara calls for continued support and action. "We have already seen abolition succeed in seven states, and D.C., while not a state, must also rise to this challenge," she passionately declares.

Sara reminds us of the dangers of complacency. "If we allow even a single seed of slavery to remain, it threatens to undo the freedom we cherish.
